This page describes how to upload to Microsoft Stream and submit to a Moodle assignment for grading which is currently being trialled at LCF. LCF is currently investigating other video submission tools for future to support additional requirements.

In order to submit your video file for assessment you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Create your video file(s) in a suitable format
  2. Upload your file(s) to Microsoft Stream
  3. Submit the link to your submitted video file(s) to Moodle

The recommended steps are different depending on whether you are being asked to upload a single or multiple videos for assessment. If you are uploading multiple videos we recommend that you first create a “Group” in Stream and upload all of those videos to that Group. You can then share that group of videos with the teaching staff and submit the link to Moodle.

Step 2 (“Upload your file(s) to Microsoft Stream”) varies according to whether you are uploading a single or multiple videos.

Step 1 – Create your video file in a suitable format

Microsoft Stream supports almost all common video formats including QuickTime (.mov), MP4 (.mp4), MPEG2 (.mpg), AVI (.avi) and Windows Media Video (.wmv/.asf).

There is essentially no file size limit but beware that uploading large files can take a very long time, especially when using a home broadband connection. A 200mb file will take an hour to upload on a typical home broadband connection. Public wifi hotspots such as those in cafes are unlikely to be reliable or fast enough to submit such a large file and will fail before the upload completes. If possible, upload your file while on the college’s superfast network. If you only have access to home broadband then allow sufficient time to upload.

Step 2 – Upload your file(s) to Microsoft Stream

Microsoft Stream is an online file sharing service similar to YouTube or Vimeo. It is included as part of Office365 that you have access to as a student.Although Stream works on mobile devices it will be best to complete this step on a computer.

You can access Microsoft Stream by logging into https://www.office.com/ using your UAL credentials and and choosing Stream from the list of apps that appear (if it is not visible in your list of apps you may need to click the “Explore all your apps” link first).

The following steps are different depending on whether you need to upload a single video or multiple videos.

Step 2A – Uploading a single video

If you are being asked to upload multiple video files for submission skip forward to Step 2B – Uploading Multiple Videos

  1. Click the Create menu and then Upload a video:
  2. Drag your video file to the window or click browse to upload your file.
  3. Your video will begin to upload. While it uploads you can give it a title and choose the sharing settings.
In the Name section, type your name and the name of the course.
In the Description section, type the name of the assignment.
  4. In the second (Permissions) section uncheck the option to Allow everyone in your company to view this video. You will get a warning to remove company access, simply click Yes.
  5. In the Shared with section choose People in the dropdown and then enter the email of your instructors. As you start typing, the name of people matching the name will appear in a dropdown. Click the name of your instructor to add the person to the Viewers and make then an Owner. You can repeat this for any other members of teaching staff you’ve been asked to share the file with.
  6. Click the Publish now button.
  7. Now click the My content link and choose Videos. This image shows the Videos option under the My content menu.
  8. You should see the video you uploaded at the top of the list. Click the three dots icon and then Share.
  9. You will now see a Direct link to video. Click the Copy button and paste the link into a Word document. This image shows the URL to the direct video and asks students to click the Copy button.
Step 2B – Uploading multiple videos
  1. Click the Create menu followed by Group
  2. A popup will appear like this:

Give your Group a name that will make it easily identifiable by the teaching staff such as “Your Name – Unit Name”. Don’t worry about the “Group email alias” as you won’t be using that. You can also leave the description blank if you wish. Leave the Access dropdown as Private and using the Add group members search box below search for and select all of the members of teaching staff that you have been asked to share your work with. Make sure to set them as owners. When you are ready, click the Create button.
  3. You are then taken to the group that you have created which will contain no videos. To upload your videos to this group simply drag and drop them from your computer. You can drag multiple videos at the same time and they will immediately begin to upload. While they are uploading you can give each video a title and description if you wish. You can ignore the Permissions section as by default the videos will be viewable by everyone you added to this group. Make sure to click the Publish now button at the bottom of each video’s upload information:
  4. Once you have uploaded all of your videos and are ready to submit your work for assessment to Moodle, click the My content menu in Stream and select Groups:
  5. Click on the Group that you have created that contains your work for assessment for this unit. When the Group page loads, copy the URL of the page from the address bar of the web browser – it should look something like this: https://web.microsoftstream.com/group/614d4971-a4f5-4974-831c-e9758976af69

Step 3 – Submit the location of your submitted video(s)

In order to prove that you completed the assignment before the deadline you need to now submit the link (web address/URL) to your video/group via Moodle.

  1. Log into Moodle at http://moodle.arts.ac.uk using your UAL username and password.
  2. On the course listing page, click on the course/unit for this submission.
  3. Find the video submission link e.g Video submission……
  4. Click the Add submission button.
  5. In the Online text field paste the link for your video/group that you previously submitted/created in Microsoft Stream and click Save changes.
  6. You should see a message saying you have Submitted for grading.
